Vickie Guerrero Exclusive Interview – “I’d love to work with Enzo & Cass”

Having enjoyed a career as one the most hated heels to grace the WWE, Vickie Guerrero has spent the last 3 years largely out of the business. She was involved in some of the most memorable storylines over the last 12 years and there is no doubt she is missed by fans. We spoke to Vickie about the growth of the women’s division, if she will ever make a return to the WWE and how she coped with the loss of fan favorite and husband Eddie Guerrero

How did you take to being a heel?

They all hated me; no one liked me back then (laughing). No, my Mom probably liked me. To be hated was something I wasn’t expecting. I look back and see how much hate I got from the fans, it was actually pretty thrilling for me. You know you have done your job well when people love to hate you. When the fans are face to face with me they say “Oh I love you, you’re so great” but on Twitter and the Internet they hate me. It’s fun to joke with them and give them a hard time.

Do you have a particular story line you enjoyed the most?

To work with Edge, during the storyline of being married to him, was so much fun. Working with the Undertaker was amazing as he was a superstar that was so much higher than me and I really looked up to him. To have the opportunity to work with him left me in awe. Also to work with the McMahons was amazing, not too many people can say they had a promo in the ring with them, it was so much fun. Dolph Ziggler was a riot – he is hilarious. There were also the girls like Michelle McCool and that whole LayCool storyline. It was such fun times.

What do you think of the modern product?

I don’t recognise half the people on the show as so many have come up from the NXT school in Orlando – which is great. The females are taking the women’s division so much higher than it was ten years ago. I am so proud of them. A lot of them are so talented; they can do promos, they can wrestle, they are beautiful and they are setting this new elite status for the women’s division. I often get my DVR and fast-forward to the girl’s stuff. I remember seeing some of these girls at the school in Orlando when they first walked in and now they are main-eventing.

Why do you think women’s wrestling is being taken more seriously now?

When I was there, a lot of women fought for equality and to be on the same level as men. They wanted to be respected and looked upon as role models but it wasn’t a very popular view back then. They used to be publicized for the great bodies they had and the long hair. The women wanted to be valued and today they are. Stephanie McMahon had a lot to do with that. She pushed the women’s division and gave them more time on TV.

Why do you think the fans had such a special connection with Eddie and miss him so much?

I think the reason that Eddie has stayed with so many people after his passing is because he proved to the fans and everyone that he was a human being. He had faults, he also had demons, but he worked all by himself to get to the top of the roster. He was very true to his feelings and was honest with everyone, it showed so much character. Fans often approach me explaining that they went through similar issues Eddie went through and he helped them. He had so much character and dignity.

How did you cope after his passing?

When he passed away at 36 – you never expect your spouse to pass away so young and the girls were so young. You never expect your family to be torn apart that way. When God takes that person away from you it’s a hard reality to face. By the strength of God and my faith I was able to keep the girls going and raise them just the way Eddie would have wanted me to. I wanted to keep our values and traditions alive. We always talk about Eddie, not a conversation goes by where we don’t mention him and he was such an important part of our lives. I am human too, some days are good, some are bad and it hurts not having him around anymore.  You don’t realise the strength you have until you have to go through it.

Will we see you return to the WWE?

I get that bug every once in awhile. I look in the ring and think – God I just want to be in there for one moment, one more time – so never say never. If Vince ever called and said “We need you again Guerrero” my answer would simply be – When? That adrenaline can only be found in the ring.

Who would you most want to work with out of the current roster?

I look at Enzo and Cass, I love them so much, I laugh every time they come out. They have great energy and I’d love to work with them. Also the girls like Alexa Bliss, Charlotte and Bayley. I would love to be part of their storylines as a general manager, I’d take away the belt and give it to someone else. I mean that was my job, I was supposed to piss people off.
